DinerpediaDinerpediaDocumenting America’s Diners

Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 8, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Dinerpedia (“we,” “us,” or the “Project”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use dinerpedia.com (the “Site”). Dinerpedia is a free, community-built encyclopedia of American diners. By using the Site, you agree to this policy.

Information we collect

Account information. When you sign in, we receive your email address and, if you use “Sign in with Google,” your basic Google profile (name and profile image). We do not receive your Google password. You may also set a display name.

Contributions. Photos, captions, comments, memories, diner suggestions, and favorites that you submit. Approved photos and comments are shown publicly on diner pages together with the display name you choose (or “Anonymous”).

Approximate location. If you choose to share your location for the “diners near me” feature, we store a coarse latitude/longitude in a cookie on your device to sort results by distance. You can decline, and we never track precise or continuous location.

Usage and device data. Like most websites, we collect standard analytics such as pages viewed, referring links, general location (country/region), browser, and device type, via Google Analytics. This helps us understand and improve the Site.

Cookies

We use cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in, a cookie to remember your chosen location for “near me” results, and Google Analytics cookies to measure traffic. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling essential cookies may prevent sign-in.

How we use information

To operate the Site and your account; to display and moderate contributions; to provide location-based results you request; to measure and improve performance; to prevent abuse; and to communicate with you about your contributions or account (for example, to notify our editors of a submission).

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us run the Site, and where required by law. Our core providers are:

Supabase (database, authentication, and image storage); Vercel (website hosting); and Google (Analytics, and OAuth sign-in). These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms and privacy policies.

Diner facts and some photos are drawn from public sources such as Google Places, OpenStreetMap, and the Internet Archive; those are not personal information about you.

Public contributions

Content you submit for publication (photos, captions, comments) is intended to be public: it is visible to anyone as soon as you post it and may be indexed by search engines. Please don’t submit anything you consider private.

Data retention

We keep account and contribution data for as long as your account is active or as needed to operate the Site. You can ask us to delete your account and associated personal data (see “Your choices”).

Your choices and rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and you may opt out of analytics by using browser controls or a Google Analytics opt-out. To make a request, email info@dinerpedia.com. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA.

Children

Dinerpedia is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

We rely on reputable providers and reasonable safeguards to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
